Could You Buy a Cannon?

Joe Biden is a gaffe machine. Back in May 2020 when he was still candidate Biden, Coma Joe argued that you couldn’t buy a cannon.

Even the sympathetic media ripped him apart. No matter. Biden’s mental incompetence allowed him to double down on the stupid claim last week, all while suggesting that in order to resist the government you need F-15s and nuclear missiles.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that all you needed to start an insurrection, at least according to the morons on the left, was a bullhorn and a buffalo hat.

Now, you need nuclear capabilities.

This is how far the left will stoop for power. And at the end of the day, gun control is about power. So is calling the January 6 event an “insurrection.”

It was stupid, but nothing close to an insurrection.

Regardless, could you private individuals own cannons in the early federal period? Yes. You can still own one now.

But more than that, Biden’s idiocy ignores the Militia Act of 1792, passed less than one year after the ratification of the Bill of Rights.

According to federal law in 1792 (a law that remained in effect through the 1860s) all American white men between 18 and 45 were required to own the modern equivalent of an “assault rifle” and they had to have enough ammunition and powder to use it.

And cannon? Yep, that too. The militias were to outfit artillery units, meaning that private individuals had to provide the cannons. The general government wasn’t buying them. And you had to provide your own horses and uniforms as well.

So much for the leftist talking points about the “militia” being the “National Guard.”

You see, the Second Amendment was designed to prevent the general government from disarming the militia. The Constitution already allows the Congress to arm the militia, but it was thought if they could arm them, they could also disarm them, hence the Second Amendment restriction.

That didn’t mean the States couldn’t regulate firearms. Some did, most conspicuously Pennsylvania, but States could do things the general government could not.

When the establishment media even piles on Biden’s stupidity, you know its bad. They couldn’t ignore this gaffe, and I couldn’t either.

I discuss Biden’s comments on the Second Amendment in episode 468 of the Brion McClanahan Show.
